is their a way to time the engine without a dial guage.I have the heads off and want to properly time it. thanx.It's a yamaha phazer 1985 485cc

  The only correct way to time the engine is to use a dial indicator, preferably a Yamaha brand one as they are very accurate and suited for the job. It's certainly not a fun job, but well worth it. The Yamaha dial indicator is used with the heads installed, inserted into the spark plug hole, using the supplied adapter.
