Snowmobile Repair: Main Bearings, retaining pins, main bearings

Question
My brother sent out the crankshaft of his Polaris out for reworking, including new bearings.  The block has holes for pins to keep the race from rotating, but the new bearings hage no pins.  The guy says the clamping action is enough to keep it from rotating.  Is this enough, or should we have it done properly?

Answer
Hello Jeff,
I think the guy who rebuilt your brothers crank is mistaken. I have always considered it important to install pins on bearings to keep them from rotating, otherwise alot of friction could result if the bearings did start to rotate. Unless the guy knows something I don't, I would recomend installing the retaining pins. Hope this information helps. Good luck with the sled! Mr.W
