How do I get the lock out of the column

Although you don't say what kind of car you have, we have recently uploaded pages with a description and photos of how to replace the lock cylinder on Ford, GM, Chrysler & Jeep  vehicles (for a small fee).  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions. Here is a link to that page.  This covers most of the locks from 1969 to present.

Lastly, I would have a new lock cylinder in hand before you begin, to see what you are working on (hidden in the column) and accomplish finishing this job quickly.
