Steering Column Repair: steering coloum, drbiii, dodge neon

Question
I replaced steering column on a 2003 Dodge Neon, I took the computer out of the same car as the column still wont start, do I still have to get it re keyed since I took the column and comp out of the same Car?

Answer
Hello Harold:
Sorry for your dilemma.
Although your thought process was correct, the execution is not possible.
The BCM (computer) and the immobilizer (the black box mounted on the column) are coded to a specific VIN.  The key is coded to the immobilizer.  So now you have 3 parts that are coded---not for your vehicle instead of 1 (the original  broken immobilizer)
At this point you have multiple choice although all of them involve a Chrysler DRBIII scan tool.
Rather than run through all of the options, here's what I would do.
Reinstall your original BCM.  Remove the replacement immobilizer and the replacement lock cylinder.  Go to the dealer with the lock cylinder and your original key and buy a new immobilizer (@$100).  These are like DVDs...once they are written to a VIN, they cannot be overwritten.  Then have them recode the replacement lock to your original key (@$20)  Finally arrange to have the car and the scan tool meet, either by towing the car or having a tech meet you after hours on the side.  He can then program the new immobilizer to your car, and reprogram the original keys to the new immobilizer (@$75).

That's the cheapest means out of it.  Alternately, you will be reprogramming a used BCM, the wrong keys and still have to buy an immobilizer

Good luck
Doug
