Steering Column Repair: Install of Bulldog Remote Starter Control, neutral safety switch, starter solenoid

Question
I am trying to help our son install a Bulldog Remote, model 1100, on a 1986 Bronco.  We got wiring from the ignition switch connected except for the wire for cranking.  My understanding is the correct wire should be off except when the key is turned to the cranking position.  There are 10 wires in the steering column and none of them are energized in the cranking position. Also, I have a Haynes manual and the color codes don't seem to match with what is in the truck.  Any  suggestions.

Thanks,
Ken
(We are in Nome, Alaska where it is getting pretty cold.  Should would be good to get this working. I came over for Thanksgiving and am leaving Sunday.)

Answer
Hi Ken:

Happy Thanksgiving.
This one takes me back a few years, but I will try to help you the best I can.  Under the hood is the starter solenoid.  It is connected directly to the battery on one side and the starter on the other by large red wires.  There is a smaller wire (usually red/lt blue wire) that slides onto a threaded connector in the middle of the solenoid.  When you feed power to the small wire it engages the relay and connects the battery to the starter through the solenoid.  I'm not sure if the wire color remains the same all the way to the ignition switch or not as it need to go through either a neutral safety switch if it's an automatic, or a clutch switch if it's a manual transmission, but that is the circuit you need to feed the 'start' power to.

I hope that didn't confuse you too much.  I am attaching a link to a picture of the starter relay (solenoid)for your vehicle. (the best one I could find in a pinch).
