Steering Column Repair: Ignition cylinder free spinning...., ford steering column, steering column repair

Question
Hello!!!!!

Here is the problem:  Was shopping, and returned to my 1989 Ford F-150.  Tried to start, but the ignition switch didn't respond with that normal feeling like it was spring loaded.  Just rotated freely without that normal restriction.  Power comes on when the switch is "turned on".  That is, all the instrument panel lights come on, radio, etc....So, I can start the vehicle by jumping the relay at the battery/fender wall hookup. The vehicle will shut off normally when the key is turned to off position. Don't know right now if it is tilt steering since I've never used it...

Hope you can help!

Thanks,

Chris

Answer
Hi Chris:

Sorry about your truck.  It sounds like you have a broken rack actuator gear.  It's a cast piece of metal that pushes the ignition rod when you rotate the lock cylinder.  When they break like that, nothing inside is moving where it should anymore.
We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to rebuild this in a Ford steering column.  They are broken down into step by step detailed photo and written instructions on our website. http://www.steeringcolumnservices.com/steering-column-repair-how-to-instructions

I hope these instructions help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply follow the links and order whatever you need online (or email us on our "Contact Us / Order Parts" page and we will get back in touch with you personally).

Good luck
