I don't know if you know what part i am talking about but if so any help on this situation would be very helpful thanks so very much     DUSTIN!!

Answer
Shift release solenoid
Shift release solenoid
Hi Dustin

I know exactly what you are referring to.  This cylindrical part is the shift interlock mechanism for automatic floor shift transmissions.  You most likely have a bad shifter assembly sending switch (common problem)and it is nit sending the proper signal to the solenoid in the column to release the key.
You have 2 choices.  (3 actually)
1) you can purchase a new shifter with the sending unit for about $350, install it and you should be fine, or
2) you can remove the solenoid in the column and never have to worry about that problem again.  the only caveat is that the key will be capable of being removed in any gear at any time (running or off, in drive or in park).  to remove it take out the 1 inverted torx screw holding it to the ignition switch on the bottom and then push the release tab on the top and it will pop out to the back of the dash.
3) you can push the little silver plunger up every time you want to take the key out.  This is the manual override for that system.  there should be a trap door on the bottom of your steering column cover to give you straight up access to the plunger.  Use a pocket screwdriver or straight probe and just release it.

I hope this helps you.

Good Luck
