Steering Column Repair: steering issue, 2006 chevy impala, chevy impala

i have a 2006 chevy impala. After a cold start this morning, i heard a loud squeal and as i backed out of my parking spot, i noticed i could not move the steering wheel at all.  It is a tilt steering wheel.  shat could the problem be and how is it repaired?  thanks

Hi Maria:

It sounds like the power steering belt came off, broke or got jammed.  That's what caused the noise.  Once the belt isn't turning the power steering pump, you lose your power assist and the wheel get hard to turn.
I would stop at your local garage and have them look under the hood.  It should be a relatively inexpensive repair (under $50) to replace the power steering belt.
