Steering Column Repair: Stearing collum, chevy silverado, chevrolet truck

Hello, i just bought a 91 Chevy Silverado C 1500 extended cab step side, the steering column is loose but we don't know what is wrong with it. The person i bought it from had work done to the dash and when the person was putting the dash back on it screwed up the column. How should we handle the situation, my dad wants to take it to a dealership, but i want to find out if there is a way to check what is wrong with it without spending the extra money to take it to a dealership. Do you have any recommendations on how to check for ourselves or if we should even bother trying by ourselves.
