Steering Column Repair: ignition cylinder housing, jeep cherokee sport, torx screws

Question
QUESTION: Hi Doug,

I have the same problem with my 2000 Jeep cherokee sport.
I have already disassembled it down to the point where I thought the housing should be removable, but I can't seem to get it to come off. I noticed a threaded hole at the bottom (6 o'clock pos. ), but there's nothing in it. It's possible that the screw broke off in there. My question is "How does this thing come off?"
thanks,

Rick...

ANSWER: Hi Rick:
You say "you have the same problem with your Jeep, but I have no way of knowing what you were reading when you responded.  Can you tell me what problem you are having and if possible, grab a phone pic and post it?  Then I can certainly see what you need and tell you how to fix it.

Thanks
Doug

QUESTION: Sorry Doug,
My question was in response to a gentleman that had jeep cherokee stolen/recovered. the ignition cylinder housing has been broken, and I need to replace it. unfortunetly, I don't have the vehicle with me, it's a a friends place. so I can't take a pic. right now. there was a pic. on this site that you posted, showing the ignition cylinder housing with the ignition switch. this is exactly the part i'm trying to replace.
sorry again, and thanks again.

Answer

broken housing
No problem
If the Jeep was stolen then the aluminum housing was broken and needs to be replaced.  The housing is attached with 2 torx screws on the top of the column, but the steering shaft has to be removed from the center before it will come off.
