Steering Column Repair: Steering wheel column, camaro z28, upper column

Question
I have a 95 Camaro Z28.  The steering wheel trim/column is loose and moves about an inch/ half inch to the south/west corner.  The inspection station told me I needed to replace the column in order to pass inspection.  I found a parted out Camaro and installed the column that I bought used for a 100 bucks.  It Didn't fix anything.  Is this normal or am I going to need to replace this with a new part.  Is it just a part I need or does the whole column need replaced.  If so how much am I looking at in part cost?

Answer
Hi John:

This is a VERY common problem with the Camaros, Fireuirds and Ccorvettes.  The airbag and upper column is too heavy for the early design tilt mechanisms and they all wear out causing looseness in the column.  You can take up some of that looseness by disassembling and re-tightening the bolts that secure it, but you will not cure all of it without great expense ($500-$600)

We have recently uploaded some videos on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the parts you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the video is for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.
