Steering Column Repair: 2000 Jeep cherokee sport steering column, jeep cherokee sport, turn signal switch

Question
I have a 2000 jeep cherokee sport ( black key ). My car was stolen and the thieves whopped out my ignition the not only broke thhe tumbler but the tumbler casing as well.Every place I talk to says I can't just replace the tumbler and casing that I need to replace the whole steering column. If this is true what tools would I need to do it and how would I do it? I am pretty good with a wrench but I have never done a steering column before. thank you for your help in this matter

Answer

Jeep housing
Hi Michael:
Sorry about your Jeep.
The part you are talking about is not available from any dealer or retail parts store that we know of, however our company does sell them (reconditioned form other Jeeps).  I am enclosing a photo of the part just to make sure we are talking about the same part; it's the cast housing that holds the cylinder in place with the switch attached.
In order to do this job, you will need to remove the airbag, steering wheel, steering shaft, turn signal switch, wiper switch and clockspring.  This housing is located below all of those and is fastened to the column tube by 2 25 tamperproof torx screws.  The only way Jeep sells this part is by selling an entire column assembly (big bucks).
If this is a job you think you can tackle (airbag and all), let me know I we can assist you with the step-by-step, otherwise we'll be glad to sell you jsut the part for your shop to install.
Let me know what you decide.

Doug
