Steering Column Repair: 97 chev cavalier, lock cylinder, release pin

Question
QUESTION: i had to change the steering column ( the place gave me a 97 Pontiac sun. steering column) when we installed it the car turned on then off now it will not turn on at all, and the anti theft light is on and I've never seen that light before.people r telling me to replace my starter, my computer, but I'm not so sure there is anything wrong with them, they were fine before the switch. i do not have power windows or doors if that matters. i just don't want to spend a bunch of money on things that will not help, please help?        Thank you!

ANSWER: Hi Jeanine:
The problem you are facing is the new column (as well as the old one) have an antitheft chip built into the lock cylinder.  The car computer does not recognize the lock and chip in the replacement column.  If there is nothing wrong with your old lock cylinder and key, simply install the old one into the new column and your car will run fine.
To do this, you only need to turn the key to the "On" position, push the release pin on the rear of the cylinder housing, slide the lock out and disconnect the 3" wire.

If there is a problem with the old lock, let me know & we will talk about reprogramming the replacement, but that's more work.

Good Luck

QUESTION: okay i guess the old lock cylinder was damaged as well( my car was stolen). is it possible to reprogram it myself?

Answer
Sorry about your theft Jeanine.
Since you have an antitheft system, I'm guessing they only damaged the column, but never got the car.  If they did get the car, how did they start it?
Anyway...

In order to program your system again it it as procedure that could take up to 30 minutes and yes, you can do it yourself.  Here's the procedure:
30 Minute Learn Procedure
Tools Required: None
1.   Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2.   Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
3.   Observe the SECURITY telltale; it should be flashing.  If it is not flashing, then you need  a scan tool to repair this.  If it is flashing…proceed.
4.   After approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn ON for 5 seconds and then OFF.
5.   Once to turns OFF, Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF, and wait 7-10 seconds .
Then:  Repeat steps 1 through 5, 2 more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes
6.   After the 3rd time you turn off the ignition, wait 7-10 seconds and then start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password and you should be fine.

Good Luck
Doug
P.S.  Sometimes it learns it on the first 10 minute cycle, so don't be surprised if it starts and stays running the first cycle.
