Steering Column Repair: 79 Corvette T/T column, hi doug, tilt

QUESTION: I tore apart the column and tighten the 3 screws for the tilt,but now I'm putting it back together and figure out how to compress the locking plate to put C clip back in the shaft just pulls out. Is there a certian trick to it Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Rick:
Yes.  You need to lock down the telescopic shaft to secure it so you can use a compressor.  We have recently uploaded some pages on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the parts you are talking about.
