Steering Column Repair: tilt/telescoping steering column, telescope works, parts catalogs

Hi; I have a 1979 corvette with a tilt/telescoping steering column. I an quite sure that I have it right up to the steering wheel. I need a diagram from the wheel to the horn button. I have shims from a vette parts supplier , it comes in a pack of three but they all seem to be the same thickness???. I understand how the telescope works but it will not go together. The diagrams in the shop manuals and parts catalogs seem to be very generic and lacking detail.Is there a set screw for the star screw that tightens the telescoping shaft inside the steering shaft? etc.
