Steering Column Repair: Loose steering column - 1990 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, oldsmobile ninety eight, tilt mechanism

Question
Hello,

I had to replace my steering column about 8 months ago after my vehicle was stolen. My steering column has been getting looser and looser after the tilt mechanism the past few months. A few times while I was turning hard the vehicle's ignition turned off.

Has the steering column gone too far to be repaired?

Answer

gm ignition rack gear
Hi Eric:
Not yet, but you are close!
We have recently uploaded some videos on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the loose tilt you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions.
You may need to replace the ignition rack gear once inside.  That is often the part that bends causing your shutdown.
