Steering Column Repair: 1986 chevy k10 steering column, tilt column, chevy k10

Question
What is causing the turn signal housing from pulling off the column? I have
removed everything ie all screws ign. switch, disconnected the harnesses, and
when I pull up on the housing about 3/8" it  binds up. Is it the sector gear? And
if so how do you remove that gear with housing installed?

Answer
Is this a tilt or non-tilt column?
My guess is non-tilt and then yes, the rack and sector gears are holding you.  In order to remove it properly, I would suggest removing the ignition switch (electrical part) down under the dash and mounted to the side of the column, and removing the rack, rod and housing all as one unit.  It's also much easier to assemble that way.
