Steering Column Repair: 1986 GMC Suburban ignition, tilt column, gmc suburban

Question
I pulled in my driveway but couldn't turn my truck off.  I had to disconnect the battery.  My ignition switch wouldn't turn off.  Now I can get it to turn off and almost on.  It'll turn and will stop just before getting to the point where it will start the truck.  I've got the steering wheel off but since my column is all one metal piece, I don't know how to get the cover off to try to fix the ignition and check the rod.  Can you tell me what I need to do to be able to get access to remove the switch and check the rod.

Answer
Hi Debbie:
I'm sorry you are having a problem with your truck.  You don't say if it's a tilt or non-tilt column and it may matter further on, but let's start with the steps required to remove the lock cylinder.  That's the easiest and most likely culprit.
the removal process is the same for both tilt and non tilt, but after that part, the columns are different.
My company website has a video of step by step instructions to remove components.  Take a look at the first couple of videos.

That should tell you how to accomplish the removal of the lock.  Once it's in your hands, you can check to see if it rotates freely or if it's bad.  Then we will know if we need to go further.
I'll wait to hear back from you

Good luck
Doug
