Steering Column Repair: steering problem, cab 4x4, chevrolet silverado

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab 4x4 with 59,000 miles. When I turn the steering wheel to the right (only) there is a sound identical to that when the wheel is turned too far in either direction. what causes this sound and how is it repaired.

ANSWER: Hi Bob:

This one (repairing a noise) is a little more difficult to do through the web, but let's give it a try.

I'll need you to describe the sound you are referring to a little more clearly for me.  Is it a squeel,  a thump, a groan, a clicking?  Does it maintain the noise if you go to the extreme?  Is it continuous while you are continually turning, is it rotational, or is it only heard once during the turn.  Are you sure it's coming from the steering column and not from a slipping power steering belt under the hood?

It's really hard for me to ask all of the possible variations of what the noise may sound like, where it may be coming from and what may trigger it, so please do your best to describe the circumstances and the sound as well as the duration.
I'll do my best to try and figure out what may be causing it and then help you repair it.

Thanks
Doug

QUESTION: If you turn any steering wheel to the right or left as far as it can turn there is a sound (shshshshsh). This same sound occurs when I turn the wheel to the right and is continuous until the wheel begins to turn left again. there is no sound when turning to the left.

Answer
Hi Bob:
Thanks for the additional information.
The sound you are referring to is the noise power steering fluid makes when there is no place for it to go (at the extreme end of a turn).  It is rerouted through by-pass valves and release valves in the power steering system.
It sound like you have a blockage in the power steering system for right turns only thus causing the same sound.  You do not mention if the power steering is affected.  My guess is it is not yet, but in time will be.  I would have the power steering checked out.  The noise you are referring to is not something in the steering column, it's elsewhere.

Take care
Doug
