Steering Column Repair: bright light switch, bright headlights, internal switch

Question
I have a 97 trans am and to turn the bright headlights on the turn signal lever gets pulled forward. This lever no longer clicks and the brights don't come on. what internal switch needs to be replaced?

Answer

dimer switch
Hi Jordan:
What you are experiencing is not uncommon. the dimmer switch can sometimes move ever so slightly to a point where it no longer has the travel to engage fully, thus no click or light change...or the switch has simply gone bad.
In either case, it's a fairly simple fix and it's not inside the column, it's on the outside of the column located above your left knee.  You will need to remove the lower dash panel under the steering column.  With that panel off, you can see the switch.  I'll enclose a picture pointing to it for your reference.  There are 2 bolts that hold it on and allow you to adjust it.  My guess is that you can simply loosen the bolts (very little) and the slide the switch up until you have full throw again & it clicks on and off.  (you may have to lower the column some to access the bolts easier.  If it never clicks for you then you need to replace it.  a new switch can be bought at any parts store for about $10.
Good luck
