Steering Column Repair: 72 Monte carlo, wave washers, tilt steering

Question
72 Monte Carlo ...I Have a replacement tilt steering colum.
The problem is the colum shift ...connected to turbo 350 is soooo light in shifting you can move it with your finger.
It doesn't have much resistance to it especially changing into another gear.I've tried adding springs to the trans linkage to make it stiffer, but to no avail.HELP!

Answer
Hello Gordie,
There are a few spring tensioners that you need to look for. First, in the column shift bowl, there should be a latching mechanism. This is located just below the shift lever after you take out the retaining pin that holds it in place. The end of the lever will make contact with this sprung latch. Next, there are wave washers and a seal toward the lower end of the column. Some coloumns also had a spring tensioner inside. Lastly, if there is a link between the rod from the shift column and a rod to the linkage on the transmission, that link also has a tensioner spring on the side.
Hope that helps.
Have a great day!
