Steering Column Repair: 1986 gm tilt steering, tilt column, column shifter

Question
Jay,
I own an 86 cutlass with a oem tilt column shifter.  I have swapped in a floor console shifter and would like to know if replacing the shifter bowl to a floor shifter bowl would be advisable or should I just swap columns out?

I currently have the new floor shifter bowl but didn't know if it could be done since the original was a column shift.

Thank's for any help you can offer.
Brian

Answer
Hi Brian,
You're better off finding a column and replacing it. Changing the bowl on the column is not a simple task, and then you could run into the problem of not having all the parts necessary to reassemble it. I'm looking at it from time and expense factors. It just isn't worth saving a couple of dollars to do a lot more work than you would with a column swap.
Hope that helps,
have a great day!
