Steering Column Repair: 96 plymouth voyger column problems, plymouth voyger, diagnostics test

Question
Jay,
I just read a post about problems with the Plymouth steering column. I am having similar problems. I would like to see what you think.

First, my air conditioner clutch (I think that it is the clutch) squeals once every 5-10 minutes when the air conditioner is on and is worse on humid or rainy days.

Second, my horn stopped working

Third, my cruise control stopped working

Fourth, my wipers come intermittently by theirselves.

Fifth, my air bag light comes on and off.

Now all of this happened in this order over the last 6 months. I have checked EVERY Fuse, I looked at the relays, but couldn't really tell anything, I have pulled the steering column off to check for a short in a wire. All of these problems are related to Steering column items so it has to be something in the column, or the power distribution box under the hood, right?

What do you suggest? And is this something that would show up on a diagnostics test?

Thanks!

Noma

Answer
Hello Noma,

1. Your squealing A/C clutch is a sign of a problem with the rotation of the compressor. What you are hearing is the cycling of the A/C compressor. Either your clutch spring is weak, or the A/C belt is loose, or it could even mean your compressor is on the verge of failing.

2-4 Most likely are related to a power distribution problem. You may have a bad relay or the connections UNDER the power distribution block have become corroded and are not making proper contact.

5. The air bag warning system is controlled by a module. It could also be related to the PD box. You would need to scan the ECM to troubleshoot the light.

Hope that helps.
Have a great weekend!
