Jay,  My leather wrapped sw is coming apart and the black padding is coming out on wife's hands.
New sw is $500+.  What are my repair options, and
if none how do I remove the sw?

Hello Paul,
One option is to do a search in a used auto parts query. You enter your email address and the description of the part you are looking for. This goes out to salvage yards nationwide. You can find these queries using Google. Don't be surprised if you find responses, but cost is nearly half of what it would cost to buy new.

Another option you have is to have the wheel re-wrapped. Try a local shoe repair shop if you have one. If not, then try an upholstery shop. I've also had some luck finding leather covers that actually fit snugly enough so as not detract from the original look. The sew on type work best versus the lace up type.
