Steering Column Repair: 1999 DODGE NEON STEERING COLUMN REPAIR, dodge neon, 2 nuts

Question
Hi,
My '99 Dodge Neon was recently stolen and recovered. As a result, my steering column needs to be replaced. It starts with a screwdriver and steers fine. Could you give me a step by step instruction on how to remove and replace the steering column and what tools I need? The Neon is automatic, has intermittent wipers, cruise control on the steering wheel, as well as an airbag. Also, is it necessary to replace the whole steering column? or can I replace the ignition cylinder/switch?

Thanks

Answer
I can't specifically address a Neon, but with many Chrysler products in general, a column is rather easy to replace. Disconnect the battery. Starting under the hood, you must remove the bolt in the link at the steering rack.
Inside the car you MAY have to remove a few bolts holding the column weather boot to the floor or column. Sometimes the boot is on the column itself and then you would have no bolts to remove. Under the dash, the column is held up with 2 nuts. Remove those buts and you're about ready to pull the column out. Take a look at everything that is still attached. Make notes and unplug the electrical connectors as well as anything else still attached to the column. You should be able to pull it straight up and out of the steering rack shaft and the whole column will be in your hands.
I hope this helps and I am sorry I don't have detailed step by step instructions for you.
Have a great day!
