Steering Column Repair: 1988 s-10 Turn signal replacement, turn signal switch, steering wheel lock

Question
Hello Jay,
I need to replace the wiper switch (multi-function:wiper/turn/cruise) on my S-10. I already broke the small plastic cover piece on the column just below the switch so I need to replace that as well now.  Looking at this site it looks like I need to purchase the plate puller that is just below the horn cover in order to get at the switch plate.  Is that correct?  Do you have any advise on the proceedure? Thanks

Answer
Hello Dale,
The lock plate compressing tool in action is at this URL:

They are readily available at most parts stores as well as eBay :

I found that link with a simple search on eBay and I do not know nor am I advising you to buy from this seller. Shop around. I've seen ones that looked a little different, but still provided the same function for around $10. I paid more for mine because I come across a stubborn plate that may require more tolerance. The cheaper models don't provide this so bear that in mind when purchasing a tool.

Once you get the plate off you will have ample access to the multifunction switch. Just remember to be gentle but firm when removing parts. If you can get it to budge, look for other hidden screws. There should be 3 screws holding the turn signal switch. The turn signal arm will need to be moved so you can see at least one of the screws. After you have those three screws out, then remove the screw holding the pivot mechanism.

After the turn signal assembly is pulled slightly out of bowl you can then remove the multifunction switch. Sometimes it is easier to pull both the turn and multifunction switches wiring out of the column together and reinstall them together.

I hope that helps.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
I appreciate any and all comments.
Have a great day!
-Jay
