Steering Column Repair: 1984 Dodge 3/4 ton tilt column, tilt column, dollors

Question
I have a loose steering wheel that moves up and down quite a lot. I have the wheel off and the column broke down and none of the bolts or screws were loose. It seems as though it is loose from the bottom. I have the shaft removed and wonder where to go next. Could some retainer or spring have broken, slipped or fallen out? What should I look for? if i were you  i would replace the colluim with a good used one 50 dollors in the junk yard you need special tools to repair the one you have and a lot of time and sometimes the bearings can not be replaced .
depending on the colluim is 84 it is hard to get parts pete
