Steering Column Repair: 97 Plymouth Grand Voyager 3.0L, plymouth grand voyager, voyager 3

Question
Dear Rob,
My Grand Voyager has been acting peculiar lately and don't know how many of the symptoms are related. For several months the front windshield wipers will come on and make a pass or two when I use the turn signal. I assume that the multifunction switch needs to be replaced/ adjusted(?)

Recently the starter switch has failed intermittantly and I tried moving the gear shift into a different "Park" position which seemed to work, but may only be coincidental. I replaced the park safety switch and didn't have any more starting problems for a couple of days. Then the problem recurred. When I turn on the starter switch I don't get power to anything. Then after jiggling it around and trying to start it several times the power will be restored to the instrument panel and the van will start.

Most recently this problem occurred and when I did get the vehicle started the top two rear window wiper switches began flashing along with the on/off indicator for the A/C and air recycling switch. Nothing I have done stops the flashing lights except removing the fuse, which unfortunately also disables the speedometer, temperature gauge, odometer & trip meter, and fuel gauge. I think the A/C stops cooling also, although the fan contiues to run. All of these instruments seem to function when the fuse is in, but with the flashing lights I can't tell when they are on and off.

Any idea how many of these problems are related and where I would begin to look for the culprit(s)?

Thanks for you assistance.
John

Answer
The multi function switch (Wiper switch) had a service bulletin about phantom wipe.
I would love to help you, but without seeing the problem I cannot fix. I find it hard to believe that all these options are on just one fuse or circuit.
I am wondering if it is a junction block problem.. Look where the junction block at the firewall in the passenger compartment meets the junction block under the hood at the firewall on the driver's side. Take it appart and spray with electrical contact cleaner and reassemble. This was a common Chrysler problem where corrosion would accumulate.
