Steering Column Repair: knocking sound in steering column, chevy suburban, dollors

Question
We have a 2002 Chevy Suburban. Purchased used last November, within the first month we began to hear a knocking sound in the steering column.  Took it in, they admitted it was a fault of the 2002 model...that the bearings in the column had to be repacked in grease every year or so.  They did so but now, almost a year later, the noise is back and it is out of warranty.  We need to know if its something we can tackle or need professionals.
Thanks.
