Subaru Repair: oil in spark plug hole, valve cover gasket, subaru forester

Question
Hello,

I saw another question on this site about a person with oil in their spark plug hole. I have a 2002 Subaru Forester and I noticed one plug had a good deal of oil in it. I gather this might be a valve cover gasket based on the other response I read. Someone mentioned step by step instructions on this. Can you help?

Also, do I need a special tool to change the plugs? They seem to be very deeply set.

Thanks,

Charles

Answer
Yes, you will need to remove the valve covers and replace the valve cover gaskets, and the grommets that go onto the spark plug holes. You will also need to replace the grommets that go onto the bolts for the valve cover gaskets. No special tools are needed to get the plugs out. Just a 5/8 spark plug socket, and extension and a 3/8 swivel will help also. As far as step by step instructions, that a little to detailed for me to type out. They are pretty self explanitory, just becareful and don't overtighten the bolts. The drivers side of the engine is the hardest to do, I pull out the battery, the washer jug, and removed the oil fill neck to get the cover off. The back lower bolt is the hardest bolt to get to, you will have to find what the best way for you to get at it. good luck
