Subaru Repair: 2001 Forrester Front Axel Noise, subaru forrester, loud noise

I have a 2001 Subaru Forrester and when I take the car out and drive it for a
significant amount of time (say >30 min) on the highway / freeway the car
makes a loud noise whenever I am starting out from a dead stop and crank the
wheel either right or left.  The noise happens under the car somewhere but I
cannot isolate it as right or left.  I have taken it into a mechanic several times
and dropped about $300 total with no results.  Any ideas?

unfortuantly noises are the hardest to diagnose, and impossible for me to do that from hear. If you have been taking it to the same mechanic every time, it's time to find a new one. If they can hear the noise, they should be able to find it one way or another.
