Subaru Repair: 98 legacy outback head gasket problem?, head gasket problem, legacy outback

Question
I have a 98 legacy outback, 86,000 miles. It has overheated a few times, now it will not keep coolant in the radiator. Every time I drive it I have to top up the radiator and not drive very far. I think its probably the head gasket, the mechanic I took it to could not diagnose the problem. My question is, if we get the expensive repair of the head gasket how likely is it that something else major is wrong with it. (warped cylinders, block problems) I am trying to decide to either scrap the car or fix it.
thanks so much for your input!
(I have already checked the thermostat and radiator cap)

Answer
It has actually overheated, there is a good chance that there could be more damage. But you won't know till you at least tear down the engine and find out. My best recommendation is to tear down the engine (5-6 hours labor), and see how everything is. If block and heads ok, but gaskets in and you should be ok, if block and heads, price check to see what a good used motor will run, or look at other options.
