Subaru Repair: Transmission failure rates, transmission failure, failure rates

Question
I have a 99 Outback with a manual transmission and 115k miles. Have you noticed any patterns as to the frequency of transmission failures? I'm trying to decide whether or not to hang onto the car (after replacing the engine with a JDM) and assess what other big-ticket items could quickly make my car a money pit. My mechanic advised I probably have a solid 60K on the new/used engine, but that he's seen problems with transmissions going (recently replaced two)...do you agree with his transmission pessimism? And is there a way to assess the current overall condition of the tranny?

Answer
There were some early problems but there were recalls and those issues were taken care of.Any transmission you get now whether it is new or rebuilt will have the updated components in them. Subaru's are good cars, I don't see any problems as long as you change the fluid regularly and keep up on all your maintainence.
