Subaru Repair: subaru check engine light, california smog test, subaru legacy

Question
I have a 1992 subaru legacy that has just failed a California smog test due to the fact the check engine light does not come on.  Is it possible to just replace the bulb or is this something a mechanic with a computer has to deal with?

Answer
I would recommend taking it to a repair shop. The bulb went out for a reason. When the bulb gets replaced they will have to scan the computer to find out why it came on. Also another possibility could be that the lamp driver in the computer (the signal that turns the light on) is defective which means it may need a replacement computer.
