Subaru Repair: oxygen sensor, catalytic convertor, subaru outback

Question
Engine check light keeps coming on after I clear it, code  indicates rear oxygen sensor. I want to replace it myself but can't find a manual telling me the location. Heck I can't find a manual. Its a 1997 Subaru outback Impreza Sport Wagon, 2.2 liter.

Answer
Ok first off there are a few different codes that will set in correlation to the rear o2 sensor some are component codes and others are conditional codes. In some cases you can replace the rear o2 sensor until you are blue in the face and never fix the car. When you clear the code what you are also doing is resetting the o2 sensor monitoring system  and it takes completion of what is called a drive cycle for the computer to turn back on the monitoring system to ready status and monitor the o2 sensor again. The rear o2 sensor is in the exhaust just past the catalytic convertor. So it is possible that the o2 sensor is faulty but there is a big difference in hooking up a generic code scanner and a shop doing a thorough analysis of the vehicle to determine the real problem i only point all this out as while your vehicle is in this condition it may be excessively polluting our envirnment. So if you want to try and save some money try the rear o2 but if that doesn't take care of the light and code please take it to someone who knows Subaru and have a diagnoses performed.
I hope that helps
