Subaru Repair: Steering, front wheel bearings, subaru outback

Question
Thanks for replying right away! I have manual transmission with a brand new Subaru clutch (everything), and I just had the front brakes pads replaced and rotors machined in October. A friend who heard the noise suspected it was the steering bearings needing to be repacked/replaced--? Does this sound like a possibility? If it is, what would you think it would cost to repair? I've recently sunk a lot of money in this car, including a rebuilt engine and new radiator. Thanks a lot for your opinion!

-----Question-----
Hi -- My 1998 Subaru Outback makes a squealing-scronking noise when I make a sharp turn such as into a parking space. It is worse when it is cold. Can you tell me if this needs attention or if it just annoying.
Thanks.
-----Answer-----
Two Thoughts ,One is if the vehicle has an automatic transmission you could be developing a little bit of transfer clutch bindage. The second thought is that maybe one of the front brake wear indicators is intermittently making contact with the front disc rotors which would indicate the front brakes are getting low.I would suggest a brake inspection to be on the safe side and go from there. You should be able to get it inspected for free or at a reasonable cost.
Hope that helps

Answer
Two other thoughts would be 1.A Vicious coupler starting to fail (this is what allows all wheel drive function on a manual Trans) 2.One or both of the front wheel bearings and or hubs have developed play and I would suspect the wheel bearing.Unfortanately the Wheel bearing isn't serviceable its a sealed unit, So replacement is the only option.Hope that helps
