Subaru Repair: Check engine light, gas cap, service history

Question
I recently bought a 2003 Outback with 42000 miles. Last evening the check engine light came on. Should I take it to a dealer service dept. to be checked out. I do not have any service history on this car.
Can you help me out with this problem???

Answer
Before taking it to the dealer make sure the gas cap is tight .Newer vehicles will set a check engine light after fill up if the cap is left loose. If the light is on steady and not flashing there is no need to rush in .Also you do not have to take it to the dealer for service but if that is what your are comfortable with then that is ok too.If you find that the gas cap is in fact loose simply tighten the cap and the light should go off in a couple of drive cycles. If for some reason the light stays on or starts to flash you should probably make an appointment for service.Hope that Helps
