Subaru Repair: flickering lights after changing battery, dashboard lights, side marker

Question
I changed the battery in my 98 forester base model.  the car just rolled over 100,000 miles.  once the new battery was installed the side marker lights and interior dashboard lights blink off, then on. note they blink slower than the hazard lamps.  on, one two, off one two, then on.  I tried clicking the door locks (heard that may reset some security system...though my car doesn't have keyless locks or a security system...needless to say it didn't work.

any ideas what the issue is?

oh, also I changed the battery because I left the dome light on and the battery ran down.  it drives fine once jumped but won't hold a charge after an hour of driving...on the old battery.

Answer
Your car probably does ave keyless entry, and you don't have the remotes. If you did have the remotes, you could use it to reset your system by locking and unlocking with the remote. If you don't have the remotes, you can try to find the switch under the dash, drivers side, to the left of the steering column. Even experienced Subaru guys can sometimes have trouble finding the switch. It is usually at the end of a lot of wire, a push button type switch, white or red maybe, and most of the time the wiring is rolled up and tucked away somewhere. We have alot of customers who cant find the button, so don't get too frustrated if you cant either. If you send me your vin, here or at spwilkins@yahoo.com, then I can check Monday and find out if you factory installed keyless or dealer installed. Either way, if you should only have to buy a remote if you want to start using it. Good luck.  Z
