Subaru Repair: Check engine light, advance auto parts, oxygen sensors

Question
Hello, I have a 2000 Legacy. A few miles ago the check engine light came on. Took it to the dealer for diags which reported a bad 02 sensor (downstream). I replaced it with a new Bosch unit from the local autoparts store, but the light is still on. Is there a reset, or do I need to run diags again?
Thanks!
John

Answer
Until the code is cleared with a diagnostic computer, or until the system retests itself and passes, the light will stay on. Most Autozone and Advance Auto parts stores will clear codes for free. You said you had this car at a dealership - was it a Subaru dealer? The reason I ask is because that year had several problems with oxygen sensors. There were recalls, computer reflashes, and lots of repeat oxygen sensor failures. If you would like, I can check and find out if your car has an open recall for this problem and you may be able to get a refund from Subaru. If you can send your vehicle i.d. number and maybe even the code number that was used to determine the oxygen sensor was bad, I can tell you if you need any more work. You can send me the vin here, or at spwilkins@yahoo.com Good luck.
