Subaru Repair: Legacy Speed odometer cable, lithium grease, wheel bearing grease

Question
I have a 1994 Subaru Legacy AWD wagon

The speed odometer cable is making some noise, and I understand that pulling the cable from the cable housing, cleaning it, re-geasing it usually does the trick

Question: I'm looking at where the speed cable goes into the transmission housing, and it looks like I either need to:

1. Use a wrench to unscrew the cable housing

2. Or...bend back two clips on the cable, where the cable goes into the cable housing, and then pull then cable out

Either way could be right.....or could destroy the cable

3. Any wheel bearing grease once out and cleaned, or a lithium grease as some advise

THANK YOU ! Cody

Answer
Hello Cody,

If my memory serves me well, I belive you unscrew it from the transmission, but not positive. I have only done 1 of these, and it was about a year ago. I would also recommend lithium grease. I hope this helps.
