Subaru Repair: Changing Fuel Filter, greg duggan, legacy outback

Question
Hi!  I've changed fuel filters before but it's been a while!  Do I have to disconnect the negative battery terminal first?  And is there anything else?  I've read on some Subaru sites you're suppose to disconnect the fuel relay then crank the engine till it dies, but I have no idea where the fuel relay is or what it is.  Can't I just unscrew the gas tank cover instead?  BTW, it's a 99 legacy outback.  One more question.  I had my spark plugs changed today; got some champion coppers from NAPA, and the mechanic told me they were no good, that I'd need NGK's for $80! Was he trying to pull one over on me???  Thanks so much Greg!

Answer
There is nothing special you need to do to change the fuel filter. Just pop the hood and loosen the two screws. Be careful if you are doing this on a hot engine as there may be alot of pressure in the lines. As far as the plugs go the stock 2.5 engine plugs are platinum and they are 12$ each at our subaru dealer. eighty dollars seems on the high side for sure. You should also be able to buy these at the local parts store, just make sure they are for the 2.5 engine. hope this info helps
