Suzuki Repair: My Suzuki Sierra (Samurai), suzuki sierra, clutch cable

Question
I have a suzuki sierra and i had a small fire underneath my car. Firstly my clutch cable broke, while accelerating out of a stop sign, and then i saw smoke billowing from underneath the car. I pulled up the handbrake only to find it did not work. I had to switch my car off and put the car in gear in order to stop it rolling backwards down the slight slope it was on. After eventually making my way out of the car and ducking my head underneath to see where the smoke was coming from i saw there was not only smoke but flames. My first instinct was to run away before it blows up, but after making several paces away from the car i realised i did not want it to blow up, so i made my way back and blew out the flames. When the flames were out and the smoke had cleared i could see that the park brake cable was red hot. Somehow it had gotten so hot that plastic shelth melted and started a fire. I'm not aware that the park brake was on during my trip before hand, I'm just not sure because of the quick pace of the whole ordeal.
Anyway, i would like to have your opinion on the situation. The clutch cable has since been replaced but the park brake cable seems to be loose and it does practically nothing.
I've read up on how to adjust the park brake but its not the same model. I was wondering if you could give me a detailed explaination on my model and if it is possible to fix myself. Suzuki Sierra SJ50 1987 Model.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Answer
The park brake cable is "history" and will have to be replaced.  Without being able to inspect it myself, I wouldn't be able to accurately tell you what's wrong.
The cable and rear brakes (if necessary) are relatively easy to replace, and until you inspect the rear brakes, and replace the cable, you won't be able to go any farther with this.
It's actually a better thing for you to get an appropriate manual, and then learn from a general repair manual (usually available at the local library.)  This way you have also learned enough theory of operation to make a good decision based on knowlege should any kind of judgement call become necessary.  If yours is like my U.S.A. version, just looking underneath, and following the cable routing should be sufficient to get an idea of how it functions.  If this isn't sufficient, get back to me and we will deal with this in more detail wherever necessary.
