Towing Issues: Additional towing charges, tow fee, towing company

Question
Hello--We live in CT. I had a vehicle towed for (alleged) obstruction of snow removal. Towing company is trying to collect from me, in addition to DMV authorized $88 hook fee, a $125 fee because they did not have the key to the car. I think this is nonsense--non-consensual tows do not require keys. Your thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Well it sounds funny to me also, as I know Connecticut is regulated and as such the charges have to be followed.

Now it does not matter if I understand that the rates say towing is 88.00 or 800.00.  Keys or no keys this falls under "non consent tows" and as such they have to tow it with or without keys.

And for no keys, to have a $125.00 FEE, is just nuts. What did they use to justify the charges.
Dollies would or could be used, or a flatbed and drag it up on the deck. But for the "no keys" to be more than the tow fee, that is nuts.

Most places I know of will add in 20 to 50.00 for use of dollies where they are used so that the vehicle comes in with all 4 of the wheels off the ground.

Talk to DMV and see what they say about the charges, after all they have the rates set and can also to the penalties if they are violated.

Here is a link to some of the CT rules for towers, and you should be able to find more information from there as you will have the answers to questions it asks.
