Towing Issues: LosingMyCar, financial repercussions, 2002 audi a4

Question
Hi Chris,

My car caught on fire the other day like there's no tomorrow, I was on the 405 in CostaMesa(OC) Ca, its burned bad, I don't think I want it anymore. It was a 2002 Audi A4 in great condition, I owned it out right, but for some reason only had liability insurance and it will not cover the accident. The impound tells me I have to clear a towing fee and something like 200bucks for overnights, then endorse the title over to them so they can sell it off or scrap it or whatever they do with it. The car is burned inside and the engine is gone as well, but the whole back, rims etc...is good. Guess my question is, will there be any legal or financial repercussions for the title holder if I don't pay those fees? I mean I seriously believe they will at least get their balance due back from scrapping that car...Every day is 50 bucks more your input is invaluable to me in these times of crisis...Thanks!

Answer
Unfortunately in some states, California being one of them, towing companies are able to charge the owner of a vehicle if they do not pick the vehicle up. This is a bit ridiculous, but they can and do. If you can pay the towing, which they are entitled to and give them a title then you are probably better off. In most states if you don't pick up a vehicle the towing company just sells it for scrap after it is not picked up.
