Towing Issues: Towing Referral, tow companies, haul freight

Question
Need a referral of a service vendor that would be willing to tow or flatbed my 2003 Kenworth W900 tractor from Birmingham AL to Gambrills MD. My tractor is unoperable and I have no idea who or what type of service would be recommended and what rate of service should I expect to pay. Your advice is appreciated.

Answer
Well I would love to really help on this question but it has some great issues here.

First of all each tow company makes its own rates for towing services and I can not tell you what each would charge. But as an average you might find that between 3 to 5 dollars a mile might be charged, and there will be a hook up charge also.

And a lot of tow companies also do not have the authority and permits to travel across the country. Most are legal and operate in the surrounding states.

Remember one thing also, that tow trucks are a different vehicle than a standard truck. They can not really hook up to a trailer or haul freight like a regular tractor can. So your trip of about 770 miles will have deadhead miles one way.

Now you might find a tow company who has something going the other way, but it is rare.

Now you can check with Weil towing in Birmingham as they do some long distance towing, and then there is Ted's towing (up in the Baltimore area, not sure exact area)
And then you might check with Southside towing in the Atlanta area as they do some long distance towing.

(I am down in Dothan and we do some long distance towing, but might be to expensive to do it with the additional 200 miles on each end of deadhead)

Good luck.
