Towing Issues: Towed due to non-valid DL., new years eve, certified mail

Question
I recently (12/31/09) had my 94 BMW 525 towed by law enforcement while attempting a journey from Reno, NV to Sacramento, CA. I was stopped for driving 78mph in a 65mph zone and do not have a valid DL.  (I know, not the smartest thing on New Years Eve without a DL, but what's done, is done.# It is now the 6th of January 2010 and I am already at 770.00 to recover the car. 70.00 for a lien fee, 315.00 for the tow, and 55.00 per day at what is now 7 days.  Unfortunately for me the long weekend made it 4 days before I could even contact the tow company or recover my vehicle.  My question is regarding legal process on behalf of the tow company in owner notification via certified mail.  I do intend to recover my vehicle and it would be great if I could arm myself with any knowledge, pertaining to my situation, that could save me some money in that process.  I realize that they may stat the lien process upon possession of the car, and can charge the 70.00 after 72 hrs #valued under 4000.00# for starting the lean process.  I was told by the tow company that they started the lien process because they had not heard from me, even though I was impossible to do so because of the 4 day weekend.  I also realize they are within the law by doing so.  How do I know if a lien was really started?  Is there anything I should be aware of that may benefit me?  Do I just have to do as they say, punishment for my stupidity if you will.....   I thank you for your time and any information you could pass on to me.

BTW.  I was stopped in CA on WB I-80 near Truckee, and the car is being held in Colfax CA, at Foothills Tow.  #21235 Canyon Way, 95713)

Answer
It sounds like the towing company is following the right procedures. I don't agree with many states laws on towing or the outrageous fees they charge. In Alabama the average storage is $20 per day unless it is covered or inside. The average tow fee for an impound is around $125-200. I would definitely ask for a copy of the lien paperwork to make sure they submitted it.
