Towing Issues: towing, tow company, car tags

Question
My car was parked outside of my apartment building it was towed during the night around 3:00 in the morning I phoned the police department of Wilmington DE and was informed that my car had been towed due to a parking violation they would not disclose what the violation was, but was later told by the management company that it was towed due to expired tags.  The car tags was not expired they were due to expire on November 30 which I did register it November 25 but I could not put the sticker on because I could not get the license plate off and they towed the on December 3rd.  My question to you is could they legally tow my car, if they would have ask the police they could have informed them that the car was registered, what if someone steals your tags and you are not aware of it shouldn't the apartment or tow company first warn you before towing it giving you the chance to clear the matter up just as it is in my case.

Answer
If the tags or decals were not installed on the vehicle then they can tow it. It is not required that they run your tag though most law enforcement agencies do and they would have known. You said you could not get the tag off? Could you not have placed the decal on the tag without removing it?
