Towing Issues: towing, storage fee, vehicle storage

Question
i got my car towed and it has been there for 2 weeks and they called me today saying that they were petitioning to get the title to my car. first off, can they do that? and second what happens when and if that does occur? and also what is there i can do about this. and do they have a maximum amount that they can charge an individual?

Answer
There is no maximum amount that they can charge as the fees will include towing of the vehicle,  storage (think ground rental) which increases daily, various administrative fees for lien processing so they can file to obtain a title and dispose of the vehicle.

Towing fees might be regulated by contracts or state laws, but since I have no idea what City or State this is in I can not provide a specific answer here.

Now as to how to do that, well since you did not mention where this is, I can not provide the answer as each of the 50 states have different laws.

BUT yes, they can legally sell you vehicle after a certain amount of time (again it varies state to state) and if they have a $1000.00 towing and storage fee (just a figure I picked for examples here), and your vehicle sold at auction for $150.00 then you are responsible for the other $850.00

And in some states (there goes that missing information again) if you do not pay the tow company the owed moneys, they can send a collection agency after you, or in some states your drivers license or the tags and registrations of your other vehicles can be suspended or revoked.

Hope this generalized information helps.
