Towing Issues: Totalled car, storage fees, storage fee

Question
My daughter had an accident in Pa., she totaled the can and it only has liability. I wanted to know if there is a cap on what a towing company can charge to tow and storage fees. How long can they keep charging you daily? What if I don't go get the vehicle because it's not worth the fees?

Answer
You or your daughter, who ever is the legal and registered owner is responsible for towing and storage fees on the vehicle. Insurance coverage is where you decide how much responsibility and risk you want to take.  Liability only, means you have decided to take a much larger financial risk than if you had bought full coverage.

As to fees, well in some areas there are regulated rates on towing and storage fees, but that depends on the contracts which the vehicle was ordered towed under.

As to how long can they charge you, well as long as the vehicle is taking up space, then the storage fee (ground rental) will be charged.

Now if you do not pick up the vehicle, or surrender the title and work out some deal if they want some or all of the tow bill, then in some cases, the tow company can gain title to the vehicle via the lien process and then sell your vehicle legally.
Then any and all unpaid fees owed the tow company after the sale can be turned over to a collection agency and we all know how that work.

Try to work with the tow company and see what you can work out as that is the best advise I can give right now.
