Towing Issues: Towing a BMW 328i, bmw 328i, fan belt

Question
Can a BMW be towed from the front?  My friend did this by using a chain attached to his truck and the transmission went out and the fan belt broke.  Are these problems related to how the car was towed or not?

Answer
As much as I hate to say it, but the "redneck tow truck" (pickup and chain) did cause the damage to the transmission ( I take it that it is an automatic).   Now the fan belt, I really have no idea of towing it caused that to fail but kind of doubt that one...

Sorry but this sounds like an expensive lesson to learn about the cost of towing verses the cost saved doing it cheap..
